What supplementary units are

Supplementary units are used when an extra measurement unit is needed on customs declarations. For example, the quantity of the products as well as the weight in kilograms.

This information is then used for statistical purposes.

Measure types for supplementary units

There are 3 measure types available for supplementary units. These are:

  • 109 Supplementary unit
  • 110 Supplementary unit (import)
  • 111 Supplementary unit (export)

109 is applied to both imports and exports.

110 is applied only to imports.

111 has never been used.

Measures for any of the 3 types of supplementary units are set up as follows:

The 3 data items highlighted in yellow in the table are important.

The ‘duty expression ID’ field has a value of 99, which means that the expression is a supplementary unit.

The measure type ID in the measures table identifies that this is a supplementary unit. It will usually be of type 109.

The ‘measurement unit code’ field in the ‘measure component’ table shows the unit the trader has to submit on their declaration form. ‘NAR’ means ‘number of items’.

The ‘measurement unit qualifier code’ field is usually null, but may be used to qualify the primary unit.
